Put simply, Gas Safe is a register of safe engineers who are trained and qualified to perform work on boilers and other gas related appliances. They have the legal backing to carry out the work and will carry a card to prove their registration with this organisation.

Backed by law these are the only engineers allowed to work with gas and gas appliances. Gas Safe cracks down on those carrying out work who aren’t’ registered and investigating any reports of dangerous operations.

What can a Gas Safe engineer do?

Firstly, before your engineer carries out any kind of work ensure that you see their ID badge which serves as proof of their ability to do the work safely. If you’re unsure then you can check the business and engineer online.

A Gas Safe engineer will then be able to install your gas appliances and you can get the peace of mind that it has been done to the highest standards and is compliant with law. They can also perform maintenance and servicing for gas appliances as well as conduct annual inspections which are important especially in commercial premises. You will however need to enquire what exactly the individual engineer is qualified to do as the levels of ability differ.

Can I fix it myself?

danger of gas DIYThe most dangerous thing you can do is try to fix, install or service your own gas appliances. While you might have a basic understanding of how things work you have not had the training to know everything a qualified engineer would. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Similarly you shouldn’t use an engineer or “mate” just because they are recommended by a friend, that person could be unqualified and unskilled – a dangerous cocktail of ignorance.

What happens if I don’t use a Gas Safe engineer?

The obvious answer to this question is that it can be fatal. If someone who is not qualified works with gas the results can lead to fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. This is the most important thing to keep in mind, you jeopardise the safety of everyone around you if you use someone not registered as Gas Safe.

On top of that there are heavy fines for anyone conducting gas work without being on the Gas Safe register. This keeps everyone safe, and if you suspect someone of conducting gas works illegally then you can inform Gas Safe and they can investigate and take appropriate action.
